Aims
This course offers a comprehensive and linguistically based investigation of the structure and uses of modern English. By the end of the course students should have a detailed knowledge of all aspects of the structure of the English language, from phonetics to discourse. Students intent on taking the course should note that this is not an English enhancement course; they must already have an adequate command of English.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to English linguistics
  • Phonetics and phonology
  • Morphology
  • The grammar of words
  • Phrase and sentence structure
  • Semantics and pragmatics
  • Stylistics
  • Language variations
  • Modern Englishes

Learning support
There will be regular two-hour tutorials and supplementary lectures.

Assessment
There are four assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
